Hole in the City Centre disappeared

(16.11.2012, Mesto Trenčín)

More than four years had to go by before the infamous  pit in the centre of Trenčín finally disappeared.  It is now filled up. Temporary side walks and grass will appear in its place. It will be the citizens who will choose the area's final appearance.

Event of the year, as the people of Trenčín emphatically call it, has been the disappearance of a huge crater yawning in the centre since the autumn of 2008. City began to fill the pit in October 31. "This is a historic day for the people of Trenčín. It has been a very difficult two-year process of negotiations with lawyers, Regional Building Authority, representatives of the Ministries of Construction and Culture. Today as we have a right to the land we can backfill the pit," said Mayor Richard Rybníček, who along with several Trenčín people watched the first Tatra truck dump soil and gravel in the pit.

"I am pleased to have kept one of the promises I gave to the people of Trenčín. I appreciate the cooperation in addressing this serious problem with our members, members of the Slovak National Council, but also with the Minister of Transport, Ján Počiatek," said the Mayor.

Trenčín First to go by the Article

City of Trenčín achieved success due to the application of Article 127 of the Building Act. So far, no one in Slovakia has used it. "It is the only provision of the Building Act that addresses the situation of finding an exceptional heritage value during construction," said Ján Forgáč from the Department of Civil Engineering, Environment, Transport and Investments. Underground garage complex was to be built on the site. Its construction was stopped due to a finding which the Government later declared a National Cultural Monument. This is what complicated the life in the city for four years.

People of Trenčín are to decide

Professionals and lay public alike will be given an opportunity to discuss the future function of this site through public forums and discussions within the "Trenčín is You" project. The first discussion will take place after Christmas. Next, the City, on the basis of the public input, will announce a public architectural tender, which should be evaluated later in the same year. In the meantime, there will be two pathways and planted grass.
